A calorie is an Energy Unit. Calories in diet apply to the calories people get from the food and drink they consume, and the calories they use in physical activity.
This article from the MNT Knowledge Center focuses on the calories associated with food and drink, as well as how energy is utilized by the human body. MNT covers what a calorie is, how many calories human needs every day, and how calories can be obtained in a way that benefits general health.
Fast Calories Facts
- Calories are vital to human health. The key is to have the right amount consumed.
- Everyone needs different amounts of energy every day, depending on their age, sex, size and level of activity.
- Quick food absorbs more than 11 per cent of their daily calories in the United States.
- Foods that are rich in energy but nutritionally poor contain empty calories.
What is a calorie?
The health information on the packages of foods should show how many calories it contains. Many people are associating calories only with food and drink, but there are calories in anything that contains energy. For example 1 kilogram (kg) of coal contains 7,000,000 calories.
There are two Calorie types:
- A small calorie (cal) is the amount of energy required to lift 1 gram (g) of water to 1o Celsius (o C).
- The amount of energy needed to lift 1 kilogram (kg) of water by 1o C is a large calorie (kcal). It is also called kilocalorie. One kcal is the same as 1,000 cal.

Daily needed Calories
The government of the United States states that the average man requires 2,700 kcal a day and that the average woman needs 2,200 kcal a day.Not every single person needs the same amount of calories every day. People have different metabolisms at different rates that burn energy and some people have more active lifestyles than others.
Recommended calorie intake per day is based on several factors including:
- overall general health
- physical activity demands
- sex
- weight
- height
- body shape
Health and calories
The human body has to live on calories. The cells in the body would die without energy, the heart and lungs would stop and the organs would not be able to carry out the essential functions required for living. People drink energy from food and beverage.
When people were eating just the amount of calories they needed every day, they 'd probably have healthier lives. Too low or too high-calorie consumption will eventually lead to health problems.
The amount of calories found in food tells us how much potential energy they carry. It is essential not only calories but also the material from which calories are taken.
Below are the calorific values of three main components of food:
- 1 g of carbohydrates contains 4 kcal
- 1 g of protein contains 4 kcal
- 1 g of fat contains 9 kcal
For instance, here is the breakdown of how a person can get calories from one cup of large eggs, weighing 243 g:
Fat: 23.11 g
23.11 g x 9 kcal = 207.99 kcal
Protein: 30.52 g
30.52 x 4 kcal = 122.08 kcal
Carbohydrate: 1.75 g
1.75 x 4 kcal = 7 kcal
243 g Raw Egg is 347 kcal. 208 kcal comes from fat, 122 kcal from protein, and 7 kcal from carbohydrate.

Easy food in the American Diet
Scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC) released a 2013 study finding that 11.3 percent of the calories people eat in the U.S. come from fast foods.
Nutritionists and healthcare specialists say that this figure is too high.
As people get older they continue to get fewer calories from fast foods on a regular basis. Fast foods make up only 6 percent of older adults' daily calorie intake.
However, with the number of highly calorific meals served in restaurants or destined for younger people, it is important for people to pay close attention to where they get their calories.
When is it you can eat?
A healthy breakfast can help the body make better use of calories. The time of day a person is eating will influence how efficiently their body is using calories.
Researchers at Tel Aviv University wrote in the Obesity newspaper that a large breakfast with around 700 kcal is ideal for weight loss and lowering the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and high cholesterol.
A big breakfast can help in regulating body weight. That matters when people eat is as much as that they consume.
