It doesn't matter who you are it is that little bit harder to keep in shape once you reach your 40s. Your body becomes more skilled in weight gain and takes longer to bounce back from injuries.

That's true of ordinary Joes and retired professional athletes alike, as you can see when you turn in to Harry's Heroes: Euro Getting A Laugh, where top fitness specialist Luke Worthington has teamed up with ex-Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp to whip a bunch of retired footballers into shape for a game against (who else?) the Germans.

If Worthington can bring the likes of Paul Merson and Matt Le Tissier into shape in the middle ages – hardly the fitness icons even during their pro days – we figured he might have plenty of useful advice for the average man too, so we enlisted him to share tips and a home workout you could try.

When you hit 40 how should your training change?

"Education regulations over 40 are no very different at any other level than those," says Worthington. "The distinction is when you're a little closer in age, the body is a bit less forgiving if you don't obey them."

What kind of planning do you need to be doing?

"Fitness has a host of measures," says Worthington. "These are muscle quality, functional capacity, endurance, body shape, and mental health. Focusing on resistance is the most successful way to improve any of those steps.

A stronger body can produce more strength but more can be absorbed as well. That would ensure that it is easier to do other things such as cycling, team sports, circuit training, and even dancing, and therefore less likely to cause injury. It is necessary to increase the amount of these activities to create work efficiency, but first, you need a body that is robust and healthy enough to cope with the workload.

Movement in all four limbs is extracted from the stability and strength of the torso, and inevitably, the body's composition increases the lean muscle to body fat ratio. Resistance training helps us to develop and maintain lean muscle while growing our body fat.

How much do you get to train?

"I typically put clients on a three-a-week resistance plan, plus two specific conditioning workouts," says Worthington."A high-intensity interval-style workout will be one of the conditioning workouts, and one will be a low-intensity long workout. Mobility workout features at the beginning and end of each workout."

Home Workout For over 40s

The session below is built to work in 5 ways on the body. "We have to cover push, pull, squat, hinge, and lunge's basic human gestures," says Worthington.

1 Push-ups

Sets 3 Reps 8-10

Adopt the location of the press-up, lower your chest to just above the floor, then push up.

"Doing well is a remarkably difficult move," says Worthington. By placing your hands on a chair or stool you can make pulling the floor closer to you more efficiently. Or if you are more advanced, you can make progress by putting your feet on the chair to avoid getting down the floor.

2 Towel rows

Sets 4 Reps 8-10

"Pull is the hardest step to execute at home, but if you get creative it is possible," says Worthington. "Make sure to do exactly that safely.

"The easiest solution I've found with customers is to improvise a suspension trainer by looping a bath towel around the top corner of a door and using that as an anchor point for running a line."

3 Squat with goblet

Sets 3 Reps 6-8

"We may not soon hit barbell squat PBs, but squats at home are not difficult to do," says Worthington. They are replicable easily, as we do this whenever we stand out from a chair. Simply sit down on a dining chair for a starter then stand up without using your hands.

"When you're a little more advanced, remove the chair and place some kind of charge before you."

Place the weight in front of your eyes, move back your hips and squat until your knees are at least parallel to the table, then drive back to the standing position.

4 Deadlift

Sets 4 Reps 8-10

"A deadlift actually bends down to lift a heavyweight from the ground," says Worthington. "When you build barbells and dumbbells for that, you can use anything really."

Get on the floor with your weight ahead of you. Hinge on the hips and bend your knees to lower the object and grab it, keeping the back straight. Raise it then by straightening your legs and moving your hips forward.

5 Split squat

Sets 3 Reps 8-10 each side

"A split squat-also called a static lung-is a good starting point for lung movements," says Worthington. "Next move to the reverse lung, then forward, and lastly side lung."

Stand up and keep weight in front of your chest. Take a huge step forward on one leg – this is your starting point. Leaning at the knees, bending down so the back knee nearly hits the ground, and standing back up.
