What is an Active Recovery? How is it useful it in your Daily Workout Routines

Active recovery is the commitment of low-intensity exercise after a challenging and motivating high-intensity athletic event is over. An example is taking a bike ride of low intensity after a complete 26-mile marathon. This may seem the opposite to do as the body needs rest, but that isn't the case in fact. After an event like a big race, when our bodies begin to move; we can reduce the risk of cramping and help the blood circulate adequately to recovery. This may be something like running on most days, but a person can spend 30 to 60 minutes stretching during the active recovery days. A person can run four days a week but can stretch on these proper active recovery days, go for a yoga class, or use a popular foam roller.

Everyone's body needs a break from workouts and to rest from our daily rough routines. When we change the routines we encourage our bodies to take proper rest and recover. A runner will need to recover from an injury, for example. Water can be a perfect source of active recuperation for healthy people and athletes. One way to adjust our habits may be to do a light workout using a pool.

How is This Possible?

The key is to replenish the muscles and doing something entirely different and less intense for our bodies. For active recovery techniques, stretching but using a nice foam roller are widely used, as it can help prevent injury. Stretching is often ignored but is a great idea for active recovery because flexibility is needed by everyone.

One should not confuse active recovery with cross-training. Both are different but the main difference is that the cross-training activities might still be intense. Successful rehabilitation practices will most likely be less serious. This is only because the muscles need rest and recuperation. Someone who does cross-training could run and swim with the same intensity on different days. A man should do less on off days, and remember that they are recovering from their principal activity. Therefore I feel strongly that the exercise should be lighter and not as challenging.
In closure, I think choosing an activity that requires less energy is important for all of us. On our rest days, the idea is not to be completely sedentary. Choosing a less stressful activity will also help the healing process in our bodies.
