What’s In Your Peanut Butter? These Ingredients to look for in your Protein Butter Jar

I'm all for a balanced diet and eating in balance less than the ideal food. Yet I believe pretty strongly peanut butter is the best food.

What’s In Your Peanut Butter? These Ingredients to look for in your Protein Butter Jar

I'm all for a balanced diet and eating in balance less than the ideal food. Yet I believe pretty strongly peanut butter is the best food and need not be messed with. I'm not asking you that we can stop any of those NEEDs. Yet I want to immerse myself a little in the ingredients ...

Usually the common expandable peanut butters contain hydrogenated vegetable oil. Naturally, oil is liquid at room temperature, but hydrogenated oil is refined (hydrogen is added) to be room temperature solid & spreadable. Using this ingredient allows the peanut butter to stay nice and smooth (to get rid of the separation of natural oil) and to increase the shelf life.

Now let's look at the peanut butter which is reduced-fat. The list of ingredients is a little lengthier. Sugar is added in the form of corn syrup, and when you extract the natural fat from peanut butter, it has to be replaced with something to maintain the same consistency (hence the higher carbs). There are also more added hydrogenated vegetable oil along with mono & diglycerides, which are additives that help prevent the separation of oil into PB. These get confusing as they are still actually fat so they don't need to be included in the nutritional details.

Natural PB could be a better option than the previous two but they will also contain added palm oil and sugar in many cases. Are they bad things? That, I think, depends on who you ask. Yet they are entirely unnecessary in the case of peanut butter.

That's why I like to stick to peanut butter, which is just ground peanuts with maybe some salt added. If at the store I can grind up my own, that is the BEST.

Added sugar is totally unnecessary because it has a natural sweetness to peanut butter. The separation of oil in organic PB may be a pain in the ass, but all it takes to have delicious peanut butter with none of the needless ingredients is good stir.

I'm not here to tell you what you should eat, and not what you should eat, but I want to empower you to make that decision. Eat whatever you want but I'm going to stick to my easy peanut butter! Credit: Cheatdaydesign
