Some Research Studies Done By Scientist About Food Prove Nothing

I just read an article that had me chuckling. It said that as you age, you lose not only your eyesight and hearing but also your sense of taste. It went on to say that the first things we lose are our sense of sweet and salty sensations.

    • Bullfeathers!! Obviously, this writer never paid a visit to my house or the house of my parents or grandparents.

The Story.

I’ve never particularly liked salty foods, so you couldn’t prove that by me. And I don’t recall anyone else in my family loving salty foods, so you couldn’t prove that theory by them, either. But sweet foods?? Oh, yeah!!

When my mother turned sixty-five, she moved across the country to be near me and, almost until the day she died, every night at 11:00 p.m., she expected me to be at her door, ready and raring to go to get our hot fudge ice cream sundaes. And I do mean EVERY night, not just once a week or when the mood struck, but EVERY night.

There was a restaurant that never closed and they even had our table ready and waiting for us when it got close to 11;15 p.m. I still remember being at a loss after she died when I looked at the clock and knew that my hot fudge ice cream partner in crime would never be coming with me again.

So What now...

And now this article says that we lose that sense of taste after you turn fifty. I’d love to interview the same people she did because I wonder how alive those people really were because none of us ever lost that sense of taste. I wish I had lost that sense of taste for sweets, but that never happened. It didn’t even happen to anyone in my family.

Maybe the writer was confused with people losing their sense of taste for sweet things after their doctor puts them on restricted diets and tells them that they are no longer allowed to eat them. But isn’t that very different from thinking to yourself that you no longer have a desire for them and when you do eat them, they no longer taste so wonderful?

Every Christmas I allow myself to binge on desserts. This past Christmas I woke up with a fierce desire for a piece of rich chocolate cake with hot fudge, chocolate syrup, and ice cream. And you know what? I found a restaurant that was open that day and, lo and beholds, there was that dessert on their menu.

The Takeaway

I almost wish I could say that it didn’t live up to my expectations and that my memories were better than the reality. But that wasn’t the case at all. The dessert was everything I expected it to be, and everything I remembered it to be. And, furthermore, if the restaurant is still open next Christmas and it’s still on their menu, I’m going to order it again.

Soooo, so much for elderly people losing their taste buds for sweet foods!! Nonsense!! If I’m still here next Christmas and if that restaurant is still open and serving that dessert, I’ll probably order that first, and then I’ll order my dinner, in just that order. I’ll also probably dream about it all year and gorge on it as my first course.

  1. On the top of article. Is that a quotation or real words. We lose our taste as old?
