5 Easy and Practical Workout With your Kids

If you are a parent, especially of young children, your workout time is limited. So, finding ways to engage in solo fitness time is worthwhile, whether it's early in the morning, late in the evening, in a gym with a childcare center, or when a mother, grandparent, or sitter may take care of the baby. Yet let's face it: It's not always the case.

But don't let your fitness goals derail this. You can still exercise around with kids. Try these activities which are child friendly. Little ones will join in, help out, or simply play close by. Don't forget to start warming up!

1. Give 10 Push-ups

Adjust the push-ups and other strength training exercises to suit the skill of your kid. Your child should rise up from his knees or just lie on his stomach and straighten his arms as you do a typical rise-up (toes on the floor, legs and back straight, elbows bent).

You can also use a set of hand weights to do simple bicep curls, tricep raises, and chest presses. Joann Ferrara, a physical therapist in New York, says older children should join you, using 1- to 2-pound weights. If they choose their own weights, give younger kids bean bags, cylindrical wooden blocks, or water bottles (fill part-way to add heft). Count as you lift up, and practice numbers too!

2. Walk, run, and roll

Let your child follow you when you're driving, walking, riding, or skating in line. In a jogging stroller, bike seat, or bike track, children, toddlers, and young preschoolers can run. When you're walking, jogging, or running, older preschoolers and grade-schoolers may have their own workout on scooters, tricycles, bikes, or inline skates. Consider a trail-a-bike, if you're a cyclist, which turns your bike into a tandem type that your child can use.

3.Yoga with 2 or more

Teach a few easy poses to your child and she can stretch or twist alongside you. Most children are very skillful and agile, but let her take the lead and go at her own pace. "Let your child get into the pose by herself — never force," says Ferrara, who is also the creator of Dancing Dreams, a child with physical and medical disabilities therapeutic dance program. "Children appear to overzeal. Err on the gentle side."

4.The Dance It Out

This can be the best way to practice with kids: Turn up the music and dance. Using the music of children or your own, and the movements of children (say, the hokey pokey), or your own. "Dance vigorously enough and this will give you a cardiovascular workout," Ferrara says. You can even play an aerobic dance workout video and call it a dance party — you are following the moves of the instructor and the kids are just doing their own jam.

5. Take the Playground

Playground equipment is enjoyable for babies, and can also be a great workout for moms and dads. This circuit routine provides beginner workout options, more experienced athletes, and even parents and children working together.
