Feeling Sleepy After Proper Workout? Here's Why

After a workout, it's normal for your muscles to feel tired but are you changing clothes out of your gym just to feel like you need to take a nap? Not only is it inconvenient to feel sleepy after a workout, but it's also potentially a sign that you are not treating your body as well as you should. All the reasons why you might be exhausted after exercising, read on, plus ways to feel more energized.

REASONS WHY YOU MIGHT FEEL SLEEPY AFTER A WORKOUT

1. YOU’RE NOT GETTING PROPER SLEEP

Ahh, good sleep. We enjoy it but most of us don't get enough of it, so that's a problem. Not getting enough zzz's can also have a negative impact on other parts of your life and health, including slowing down your metabolism, besides the obvious fatigue that is caused by lack of sleep. Our metabolism is what keeps all our cells in working order. "That means your heart, your brain, your blood flow, your organs — all of them rely on your metabolic functioning to keep you alive," says Samantha Cassetty, RD. "And your sleep is one of the primary lifestyle factors deeply linked to your metabolic functioning." Sleep deprivation has a profound effect on the internal metabolic processes of your body, and shortening your sleep even for a single night!) (can mess up your hormones and increase your appetite. "When you have bad sleeping habits over time, weight issues and other health conditions are likely to increase," Cassetty told us.

2. YOU’RE FULLY DEHYDRATED

We know how necessary drinking water is. But if after that you work out and feel ultra-fatigued, you may not be drinking enough. A small 2012 study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, measured mood, attention, and mental abilities in 25 women who were either given enough fluids to stay optimally hydrated or induced to a slightly dehydrated state. Researchers found that being dehydrated triggered symptoms of headache, lack of concentration, feeling fatigued and low mood both in rest and during exercise.

3. YOU’RE NOT EATING THE RIGHT FOODS TO ENERGIZE YOUR BODY

Food is not just delicious; it is also the fuel that helps your body break down into energy fats and sugar. If you're "fueling" your body with refined foods of little or no nutritional value, after exercising, you probably won't feel great because you deprive your body of the strength that comes from eating the right things.

Note: that post-workout fatigue could have other underlying medical causes. When you think that the culprit behind your sleepiness is anything other than the above causes, contact your doctor.

4 WAYS TO AVOID POST-WORKOUT FATIGUE

1. PRIORITIZE YOUR SLEEP

"Sleep is the guaranteed rest period for your body," says Courtney Roselle, a Grace Fitness personal trainer and foundress. "It's the chance for the muscles to regenerate and refresh your body mentally and physically." So, make sure you 're clocking after a workout in at least seven hours, did you?

2. STAYING HYDRATED

If you aren't used to all-day drinking water, it's time to start. Whether you mark water goals on your bottle or set an alarm on your phone to remind you to take a few sips, hydration is one of the best things you can do for your body — and the easiest one. It's also tempting for people working out in the morning following a sweat sesh to go straight for the coffee. Bad concept, says Punch Run Lift personal trainer David Middleton. "After a workout, I see a lot of people coming straight for a coffee and that's a major no-no from me. Rehydrate the body before any caffeine, first with water.

3. RECONSIDER YOUR DIET PLAN

"It is one of the most important and underrated parts of the training that you eat within the first few minutes after a workout," says personal trainer Lisa Reed. You will want to eat shortly after working out with a small number of carbohydrates and protein to help the body heal faster, as well as repair and build new muscle tissue. How fast? Research has shown that consuming a meal directly after exercise (such as within 15 minutes) is better than eating one hour later, Reed tells us. With that in mind, three tasty snacks are here to optimize recovery.

Crackers with Hummus and Whole Grain

"The body prefers carbohydrate-containing foods after a workout since it's burned out all its energy reserves," says nutritionist Lindsey Joe. Top a couple of whole-grain crackers with protein-rich (and totally delicious) hummus to replenish those stores (aka glycogen).

Whole Eggs

And not the white ones. "The egg yolks contain several vital nutrients for the health of the brain and bone," Asche says. She recommends packing a few hard-boiled eggs into your gym bag for a fast and easy protein source, coupled with a slice of whole-wheat toast for more post-workout carbs.

Low-fat Milk Chocolate

The American Council on Exercise recommends trying liquid foods rather than solids for those who find it difficult to eat right after the workout. And chocolate milk, thanks to its delicious combination of carbohydrates, protein, and sugar, is a perfect choice. (At the sugar just go easy.)

4. COOLING DOWN AFTER WORKOUTS

When we complete a workout our first instinct is to get out of the gym as humanly as possible. Yet cool-down activities can be just as important as the actual workout, if not more important. "After physical activity, your heart still beats faster than normal, your body temperature is higher and your blood vessels are dilated," the American Heart Association says. Which means you could pass out or feel sick if you stop too soon.

Cooling off by relaxation often decreases lactic acid accumulation, which can also avoid cramping and rigidity. Such exercises will also avoid, or at least reduce, delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS, the muscle pain and stiffness that you experience from 24 to 72 hours after exercise, anytime. "One of the biggest post-workout errors I see people making is skipping a cool-down stretch or leaving before a community fitness class finishes," says Jonathan Tylicki, AKT's accredited personal trainer, and educational director. "Stretching may help avoid soreness, calm the nervous system, promote mobility and flexibility, and may even improve the next workout."
