Your knees are your body 's biggest joint and they're responsible for so many of your movements. And recent research shows that those doing physically challenging jobs are more likely to develop osteoarthritis in the knees — which means that taking care of knee joint safety is important for longevity.

The result, published in Arthritis Treatment and Science, came from a study of 71 studies that looked at more than 951,000 participants, some of whom had more sedentary occupations while others had more active ones (jobs requiring lots of sitting, standing, walking and heavy lifting). Those who worked in physically challenging occupations were 52 percent more likely than those who were not as involved in their careers to develop knee osteoarthritis.

You are dealing with inflammation of a bone and a joint capsule in some form of osteoarthritis. Pete McCall, MS, a strength coach and the spokeswoman for Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel, says that cartilage covers the joints, and serves as a kind of shock absorber. Naturally, it breaks down as you age and through movement, which is when your joints start connecting to each other, which can lead to pain.

There's a difference between exercising and going during the whole workday, which explains the possibility of osteoarthritis, according to McCall. "Exercising increases collagen development, which is an integral part of cartilage," he says. "But if you're going for an extended period of time, not performing a particular workout, the cartilage breaks down over time. Exercise creates new cells that can repair damaged muscle tissue and keep your body running slightly more efficiently while being physical in your job puts a lot of wear and tear on your body.

Because this form of physical activity — from standing up to walking and kneeling — is simply a routine in so many professions, taking care of your knee joint is extremely important. "You really have to take good care of that so your knees can last a lifetime," McCall says. "If you don't pay attention to them, this is where you can break down your cartilage." Keep reading for expertly accepted tips to improve your knee joint protection.

How to preserve and boost joint health in your knees?

  1. Strength training: "Do two to three strength training sessions per week which include glutes and core exercises," McCall says. This means powerful muscles are in your surroundings and can help absorb effects.
  2. Wear appropriate footwear: Your footwear plays a major role in your knee safety according to Chad Beauchamp, DPT, physical therapist, and founder of Repair Sports Institute. "W orthotics where appropriate," he says. Just make sure you have ample help in your shoes if you're on your feet all day.
  3. Check on your circulation: Dr. Beauchamp also says blood flow is vital to your joint health. He suggests percussion massage therapy (with a Hypervolt or Theragun), cupping, or compression to do this.
  4. Stretching: Stretching is vital for any active routine, but it also plays a part in your health together. Dr. Beauchamp says hip and leg stretching will help with the knees in particular.
  5. Nutrition: What you put on your plate, Dr. Beauchamp says, can also lead to healthier, stronger joints. Studies have found vitamin K and omega-3 fats particularly essential for a safe bone diet. In addition, Dr. Beauchamp recommends reducing the intake of inflammatory foods (think sugar, fried foods, and dairy products).
