This 8 Minute Core And Back Plank Workout Seems Easy

For any given workout, when it's time to hit your heart, most of us start crunching and planking until our abs are on fire! But while the front of our trunks tends to get all the attention, you'll want to think of it as a whole, 360-degree entity in order to really strengthen your mid-section, which means hitting your back just as hard.

Your heart consists of at least 14 different muscles (although there is some debate among trainers about what the true number is)—all linked to the spinal column. The "anterior" muscles are in the center, your stomach down, and the "posterior" muscles stretch from your shoulders down to your booty in the way. "It's important to incorporate this in your core practice because it's part of the cornerstone from which all movements start," Sarah Pifer, ACE-certified personal trainer and district fitness manager at Gold's Gym.

Since we spend so much time sitting (especially these days), most of our movements are very anterior-dominant, meaning that the muscles in the forehead of our bodies are shortened while the ones in the back are lengthened and weakened. "This disparity leads to discomfort in the back," Pfizer says. "If we strengthen the rear pillar, and the entire rear chain, it will help prevent this from happening."

So to strengthen your heart to its full capacity, you'll want to target your back just as often as your front would usually. To help you do this, Charlee Atkins, founder of Le Sweat, has put together an 8-minute series at home that will allow you to hit both in one fell swoop. You can add a dumbbell to spice it up, but even without one, simply using your own body weight, you'll get plenty of burning on both sides of your body.
