What's The Edging?

If you've ever postponed gratification only long enough to grow so furious that you feel like you're going to explode, then you've already witnessed the idea behind edging. Simply put, "edging is when you get yourself or your partner close to orgasm, back off until the climax is achieved, and then build up the sexual energy to enter the climax again," says Uchenna Ossai, D.P.T., a pelvic health physical therapist and sex educationist for LifeStyles and SKYN Condoms. "[It's] one of several, oh-so-cool ways to improve the orgasm of a human and the sexy experience of time."

It's very much like going on a rollercoaster ride, too. Think of the orgasm as the end of the ride: you push the coaster car slowly up to the top of the slope, but then you get back down before you get there, says Ossai. Repeat the cycle a few times longer until you hit your climax — Or has finished your journey.

Why Would It Feel So Good During Edging?

To deny yourself a cookie once you have finished your job seems like a well-earned reward until you have. The pleasure you'll get from edging may be just as psychological, but for why it's so darn awesome there's also a pretty simple physical explanation.
"If you avoid orgasm and start the stimulation, there's increased blood flow to the pelvic region," says Courtney Cleman, founder of the V. Club. "When we talk of flowing blood, we generally think of a male erection. Yet females have their clitoral organ 'erections,' [and] edging produces a better erection for both men and women.

Could I Just Try Edging Myself?

You wouldn't be serving the party guests a meal without first tasting it, right? The easiest way to figure out what works for you during masturbation is by trying out the edging technique.

"Women should edge through various stimuli, rather than dropping into a rhythmic pattern of movement," says Cleman. So, if you usually masturbate with your fingers and prefer slow, rhythmic strokes along your clitoris, start off that way, then switch it around your clitoris with quick strokes or circular motion. Vibrators of Love? Experiment with various speeds or indulge in a sex toy that wouldn't usually catch your imagination or attention.

To truly accept edging, leave yourself wanting more by masturbating for a few minutes, stopping and trying to occupy yourself by taking on a new job before getting back to the deed, says Cleman. The more anticipation you create, the stronger your orgasm becomes.

How Do You Test Out Your Partner's Edging Technique?

When you're able to experiment with your partner after you've tried edging on yourself then the first move is the most important: connect.
"You don't want to confuse your friend, so ask them why it takes you some time to achieve orgasm," says Cleman. "Be honest about your edge desire. It's a fun, intimate activity for a couple to enjoy together."
A few ways to get started: "When you get really close to orgasm, you might playfully move your partner aside, or turn the spotlight on them for a moment," suggests Cleman. If there's something you 're worried about (like things you don't want to be talked about), Ossai says putting certain boundaries in advance. Otherwise, take turns to experiment with various strategies to get you or your partner into orgasm.

Are There Some Strategies For Edging Up?

The sky is the limit when it comes to defined edging techniques. What's right for you and your partner really depends on your preferences in terms of manual, oral, and penetration. Yet Ossai says the solution to "green light, red light," is a strong starting point.

"It is when you come close to orgasm and then you stop absolutely touching — red light — and allow the sexual energy to settle down a bit [before starting] again — green light," says Ossai. You can use the answer to "black light, yellow light," too. When you reach orgasm gradually return by touching other parts of the body in a gradual and guided way, Ossai says. "You are still holding the sexual energy, it’s just being diverted until you are ready to get back to orgasm town.”
You shouldn't do a thing? Get up with your friend or yourself. Edging is all about living in the moment and concentrating on enjoyment.
"You can come to orgasm in two minutes or it [could take] 45 minutes, depending on the context of the day or your life," Ossai says. "What really chases away the enjoyment is preconceived conceptions of what sex should be like. When you want to try edging with your friend, treat this as if you were going to have a fun game of exploration. The theme: 'pleasure experience'"
