Why This Exercise Move Helps Your Neck And Shoulders?

Even though the moment it feels worth slouching and hunching over, your body pays you back ten times as much with pain and discomfort. In reality, your spine and its supporting muscle groups want to be held in proper posture, so those curled-up positions can take a toll. A body expert wants you to do a certain dynamic step during the day to relax your neck and shoulders to help remove any of the stress from sitting.

The longer you are in the role, the stress, and tightness caused by sitting get worse. "If we sit at a desk or don't use our arms or hands, our fascia and muscle tissue starts to stiffen and limit mobility around the nerves," says Christina Lumba, a licensed massage therapist and mobility specialist with Myodetox Clinics. "Our nerves do need to move with our tissues and when all the structures around them get tight, the nerves can get tight too, which can cause pain in your arms and hands."

Inactivity is actually one of the worst things you can do to the body and that can lead to chronic muscle inflammation. "Repetitive stress of any type can lead to inflammation, and that includes inactivity," says Stretch*d program director Jeff Brannigan. It's so important to shift as much as you can during the day to prevent your muscles from being contracting all day long.

Lumba is a big fan of a controlled movement called "wring the towel" for your upper-body muscles which at once loosens your back, shoulders, and arms. "Not only does this step support your muscles, but also your fascia and the nerves flowing through your neck and through your arms and hands," she says. Lumba suggests "wringing the towel" every hour you sit to clear your upper body.

How To Lose Your Neck and Shoulders With The 'Wring The Towel'?

  1. 1. When standing, spread your arms with one palm up and the other palm down to your sides in a 'T' pose. Turn the head towards one foot.
  2. 2. Stretch your arms with one arm turning down and the other up. Rotate your head toward the other side at the same time. Be sure your back, shoulder, neck, and head move enough to experience a stretch.
  3. 3. Remember that you can sense any pain or irritation going down your back, forearm, and through your fingertips, but that's all right — just switch to tolerance. If it starts hurting then turn it down.
  4. 4. Complete in five 'wring' for a total of 10 on each side.
