The Typewriter Push-Up Is The Best For Chest Muscles

Here's the push-ups thing: They may be challenging, but they're never boring. There are dozens of different variations out there (The Sphinx! The Spiderman! The Dive Bomber!) that you can mix and match in your core and upper body to work every single muscle. And the latest eye-catching iteration? The push-up typewriter.

The transition involves moving the upper body from side to side (yowch) with a classic push-up at the bottom, with your chest a few inches from the ground. Think A piece of paper that moves through a typewriter. The motion requires you to engage your chest and heart the whole time and you will almost instantly begin to feel the burn. What's more, you'll get a good little upper body stretch across your chest and shoulders, as you straighten your arm to move your body.

Since that's obviously a more advanced take on a typical push-up, you're going to want to build up your strength before you make your own move. Get comfortable with high planks as well as regular and wide-grip push-ups (taking care to maintain proper shape, keeping your core engaged and flat back), then you can work your way up to try the typewriter.

Start in a push-up position with your arms spread out slightly in front of your body and your core and glutes engaged as you hold everything in a strong, straight line to nail the step properly (when you're ready, that's); Bend your elbows down to 90 degrees so your chest is slightly above the ground and then lean to one side by bending one elbow and straightening the other. Then, move your weight to the other side by swapping the bent and straightened arms you have. A full-range movement from side to side counts as one repetition, and as many as the body can take you can repeat.
